If you want to point a domain name that you have to another domain name or subdomain, one way to do that would be to use a CNAME record. By setting up such a record, the domain address being pointed loses all its records (A, MX, and so on) and instead, it takes the A record of the Internet domain it's forwarded to. That way, if you use a web design service by some provider that gives you a subdomain, you can use an actual domain and not only will it be redirected to the site you have created, but it will also be displayed in the web browser address bar at all times. Other possible uses of a CNAME record are to forward all the targeted traffic from various subdomains to their main domain name, or to use the webmail service of your webhosting company by using webmail.your-doman.com, for instance. The latter will work only by setting up a CNAME record for a subdomain because this kind of a record set up for the main domain name makes it impossible to use e-mail addresses.

CNAME Records in Web Hosting

If you have a web hosting plan from our company and you want to create a CNAME record, it will take you just a few clicks to get it done. You can access the DNS records for all domain names and subdomains hosted in your account from the Hepsia Control Panel included with each plan and adding a new record is as simple as clicking on a button, picking out the type, which will be CNAME in this case, inputting the actual record value and saving the modification. In case you have never added such a record before, we have a Help section with a detailed video tutorial you can watch, or you can simply contact us and we'll assist you with this task. If you have created an Internet site through another provider, you want to use a private URL for your webmail or you would like to designate a subdomain for use with the services of a different company, like Google Apps, all it takes is creating a CNAME record with a few clicks in your CP.
